An inter-university research team by HKUST, CUHK and HKU conducted a study on extreme weather events and their impacts on the built environment in Hong Kong. According to climate model projections, the research team indicated that Hong Kong is expected to experience its highest hourly rainfall of 230mm in the 2040s, over 40% higher than the record set during a recent black rainstorm. Prof. Jimmy FUNG, Associate Provost (Teaching & Learning) and Chair Professor of the Division of Environment and Sustainability (ENVR), said the intensity of rain is going to increase tremendously amid global warming.

In an article by Prof. Donald LOW, Professor of Practice in Public Policy of the Division of Public Policy (PPOL), he commented on what Hong Kong should do to prepare for years of weaker economic growth in mainland China. He suggests that a more active and adaptive government is needed for re-industrialization, developing stronger ties with other regions, and tackling future challenges.
